I recently completed a Ph. D. in cellular and molecular neurobiology with a basic research component, but have since then changed trails and begun the MDCM program at McGill. It is an entire history of personal and social experiences that motivated this drastic change in my professional life, largely built on a newfound vocation for bettering my community and a need to act directly on its vulnerable constituents. Enrolling in McGill’s medical program was, synonymously, a pledge to put myself at the service of people, to elevate equity, diversity and inclusion at the heart of the system that ensures one of the most fundamental and multidimensional rights: health. To do justice to this vision, I decided to invest myself in McGill’s Student Association for Collaborative Mental Healthcare as the medical students’ representative. I plan to grow from my participation in this group and hope to find ways to integrate what I will have learned in my future practice, in my workplace, and in my profession.
