Christian Tonnesen

B.A. Psychology

Christian (he/him) is a third year McGill Student in the Psychology program with a minor in Computer Science. He has been interested in the mental health field for many years now, whether through personal projects, extracurriculars, or in his career. Currently, he is involved in multiple groups on and off campus, whether it be the SSMU Mental Health Outreach Committee, the McGill Student Wellness Hub Advisory Board, Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy (CSSDP), and CHM itself. In addition to these groups, he also has been working for the past two years as a Floor Fellow in McGill residences, working to build a strong community and act as a resource for students, as well as guiding them to more professional sources. He believes Floor Fellows play a key role in helping introduce students who may not have approached or seriously thought about their mental health begin their own personal journey, often pointing them towards resources and in many cases, using active listening skills to help students. This factors into his definition of collaborative mental healthcare, which is creating an environment between professional practitioners and a patient’s social circle that helps to alleviate the burden of illness they experience. He believes that a collaborative model would be more beneficial in allowing patients to feel supported and work on their mental health not just when they walk through the door into a professional’s office, but when they walk out and beyond. Christian hopes to work towards implementing this model in his future career, where he plans to work as a clinical psychologist in the Montreal area, with a specific focus on adolescents and young adults.
