Since mental health manifests in all aspects of life, it seems clear that mental healthcare should be similarly all encompassing. This is why I think it is important that a collaborative approach be taken to provide and discuss patient care – collaboration between mental health care practitioners, researchers, and community members. Initiatives like CMH will be critical platforms in bringing about this integration that I hope to be a part of. As a McGill student studying Neuroscience, I’m interested largely in the behavioural and neuroanatomical correlates of psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, as well as possible treatments and therapeutic strategies. Research-wise, I’m currently carrying out a project at the Computational Brain Anatomy (CoBrA) lab at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute investigating the effect of lifestyle factors (ie. smoking, obesity, hypertension, depression, low educational attainment) on the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease. I’m also enthused by the use of creative arts in coping with mental or neurodegenerative illnesses. In relation to this, I partake in model drawing sessions at the Centre de design de l'UQAM and volunteer for the CSSS Cavendish St Margaret Day Centre. In the long term, I hope to pursue a medical degree in Psychiatry or Neurology.
