Understanding mental health from a multidimensional perspective is an essential attribute of incorporating a collaborative approach into mental healthcare. Viewing mental health as a multifactorial continuum promotes the development of a support system capable of precisely understanding the needs of an individual and successfully addressing them thereafter. Collaborative healthcare promotes the dialogue between mental health professionals and improves our understanding of what an individual needs right here and right now.
By currently pursuing a Master’s in Neuroscience, I am trying to reassess the validity of the medical model that has been prevalent in mental healthcare over the XX century. By investigating the biomarkers of major mental health conditions, I am striving to understand what such an approach lacks when implemented alone and what other non-biological factors should be considered in order for a successful support system to be established. In addition, in my work, I am trying to promote a dimensional view on symptomatology and what it means for individuals without any mental health diagnosis to have symptoms of major psychiatric conditions. I have been inspired to pursue my educational and health promotion goals during the years of my work at the Neuropsychiatry division of the Toronto Western Hospital.
